Service Learning is such a critical learning component that CHS requires it of all undergraduate students. The CHS offers a unique one-year approach: The first semester combines academic studies, experiential learning, and professional development prior to placement in a community agency. The subsequent semester includes meaningful work in the community with a concurrent course to support students as they move from theory into practice.
To best connect the field with the classroom, CHS service learning focuses on:
- Clear connections between health care and the service activity
- Frameworks to help students understand cultural competence, social justice, and health competence
- Community-identified needs or opportunities
